My laptop - at an extremely stressful time for me - has decided to give up the good fight. Yesterday, the screen went suddenly black when I moved it. I have noticed that when moved, this tends to happen. It appears to still be working, because the little lights are flashing, the screen just dies. Unfortunately, I think the number of consecutive reboots I've performed in trying to get the screen to work (my dad managed it yesterday!) have brought down the wrath of some techno-God, because when I turned it on for the last fateful time yesterday, it informed me sternly that there had been a driver failure (something about IQL?!) and told me to perform advanced Startup Repair. It then froze in the midst of these repairs, leading to much distress from me.
'Well, when I was at university, I didn't have a laptop,' consoled The Libertarian upon calling me later and hearing my cheerily-expressed desire to murder the bloody thing by dashing it to pieces, preferably 'pon my knee for maximum satisfaction (HA! TAKE THAT, TECHNOLOGY! FEEL MY BRUTE HUMAN STRENGTH!).
'I had a quill... and parchment...' Cue near-helpless snickering.
'Did you also hand in your essays by carrier pigeon?' I asked.
'Oh - but of course.'
So, you see, I am not weeping, wailing or thrashing like a Kathy who has lost her Heathcliff just yet. I am going to, ahem, vigorously 'patronise' the uni PCs because it's not really looking at all likely that I can take my PC back with me (even if the Advanced Startup Repairs it was performing this morning were successful, whatever the hell it is that's loose or in need of replacing somewhere on the left side of its innards - yeah, I've got the measure of you, Amilo Li 1705! - needs to be dealt with).
However, considering that this probably means I will go insane (I won't be able to play my music except on my IPod, access the Internet in my room, watch TV or read comics), I am a little apprehensive. I'll have to make entertainment the old-fashioned way, which probably means I'll get ahead with my reading for once.
The only terrible fear I have is that my PC will end up being foutu beyond saving. Please God, no. I have copies of my work and of pretty much all the music on it, bar Girls Aloud's back catalogue and of the TV shows... but all my pictures ever are there! It'll be goodbye to those, and also to all my first two years' uni work, which is a really scary thought.
So... I guess... Happy 2009 to you all! I hope you had a wonderful celebration and that this year will be satisfying for you, and I really mean that. Thank you so much for reading me, it's appreciated.
(Pray for meeeeeeeeeee!)

Hahaha....X-D.
Computers are the most frustrating pieces of shit in the world. My brother and I, through fighting them for many years, are a tag team of "Computer Fixer Dudes" (yes that is copyrighted so don't even think about it.....:p). He handles hardware issues and I take care of viruses.
Our services are free but, sadly, you are out of our "service area".
Hahahaha!
That sounds AMAZING. Do you have matching T-shirts with that printed on? 'Cause if not, I would TOTALLY look into it!
I am keeping calm about this. Relatively so anyway. My uni library and computer rooms are open to me, and there is a good chance that I will end up slightly thinner as a result of the techno-troubles :-D.
I just really hope that I don't have to get another. I COULD deal with it, but I don't want to lose my pictures, especially not the ones of The Libertarian and I, and my pics from last year!
I am not totalyl computer-illiterate, but it is worrying because I am not able to discern clearly whether the plague 'pon my PC is down to two different problems, or just one...
You are looking for the silver lining....I like that. I'll probably do that for these first few days of the New Year and then go back to being a pessimist after a week or so.
I was only half serious about my brother and I. We do fix people's computers if they know us and ask but we are not organized. It would actually be a good idea for a career though. One could make a fortune helping people fix these little problems.
You don't have to lose your files even if the computer is toast .....the hard drive can be removed and hooked up to another computer and the files can be extracted. That is, unless the hard drive is the problem and even then you can send it to a place that can extract the files from a damaged hard drive. It costs a FORTUNE though. :-(
I wouldn't worry *too* much...
Sounds like yer hard drive isn't the problem, so the data on it should be recoverable, whatever else has failed.
Mind you, you really *should* keep backups of all yer photos - I had the shame of having a hard drive stacked with pics of my mini-primates completely physically die, and no backups..while I was being "IT bloke" at a sports centre...
That's why the current pc has 2 hard drives...and cd-roms, and some online, etc,etc
Cheers!
We've just had our comp die on us, but luckily had another in reserve for back up. But I have been without before for about 2 months, and it was v annoying. Not as bad as it would be now, cos then I didn't have a blog to maintain ...
Hope it gets sorted, and happy new year!
I spent two Net-free weeks at home over the holidays. I could happily have had BT shut down, and have now realised that Internet cafes are the best thing since sliced bread! But I DID get 2 1/2 books finished. Every cloud...
