Englishhhh People!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

My boyfriend just linked me to this video of fucking Steve McLaren (former coach to the English football team). The team he's coaching now are Twente Enschede of the Netherlands because, as my boyf put it, 'NOBODY else would touch him as he's SHIT - really shit.'

However, it would appear that that is a grossly unfair underestimation of Mr. McLaren's character - he's a moron too! I didn't really notice it as much at first, but he is doing that very English thing of insulting other nationalities by responding to his interviewer in deliberately slow, bizarre English (at one point, he actually says 'Everything is there for a surprise' !!! WTF?) and adopting a slight, fake Dutch accent.

Fuckin' why? Why do English people do this? It isn't just white English people of course, although it often is. By 'this', I mean trying to imitate the accent of the people they're talking to and/or speaking English slower and/or louder. If you're going to move somewhere, LEARN THE FUCKING LANGUAGE. No-one's saying you'll be fluent, but at least make SOME effort before you go there. In Paris in 2003 or 2004, I remember cringing as my parents enthusiastically mispronounced the names of things and did the talking louder/talking slower thing repeatedly. Oh yeah, and we also went to an Indian restaurant. In France.

However, I can almost forgive it in my parents. They speak three languages as it is. Learning English was an absolute nightmare for them - learning French would take so long, there would be no point at their age. My parents are the same age as some people's grandparents. On holiday, it can almost be forgiven, provided your holiday isn't a month or longer. In that case - PHRASEBOOK, bitch.

I know this might sound bad, but when it comes to fairly middle-class white people moving to Europe, though - the staid, Daily-Mail-reading, aspirational types who actually visit the chateaux near where I lived last year for enjoyment - I have very fucking little sympathy. I feel the same about ethnic minorities in the same position, but here's the thing. Ethnic minorities don't generally make a habit of moving out of choice, especially those who've already grown up in somewhere that's not their place of origin (Who does, really?!). Laxmi Mittal/Hinduja brothers-style exceptions aside, most of them aren't even rich enough to think about getting a villa in Spain or whatever.

Back to the hate-spew, though. Daily-Mail reading, aspirational pricks going to live in Spain and France and the like have never held much appeal for me, but now I feel even more coldly towards them since my year in France. There is a country that is struggling as it is to work out where the fuck to turn and what to do underneath a populist and hugely divisive president (the left HATE him, so do some of the right and the rest either don't know or are going with the flow from what I know). I heard more than one person saying 'This is their 'Thatcher years' while I was there.' I don't know about that. What I DO know is that in a country where race desperately needs to be discussed and dealt with openly and where the status of the language is continually under threat from English, the last thing they need is an influx of self-centred, bigoted, idyll-seeking Middle Englanders who don't speak their language and don't have a fucking clue about their culture. Those who live there and don't learn the language at all REALLY drive me nuts, much like the ethnic minorities who came here and depend on their children to do everything for them. Unless you're actively prevented from mingling and learning, there's no excuse.

It's all very ironic really, because these types of people, who tend to see themselves as beacons of righteousness, are responsible for destroying a lot of the 'positive' stereotypes about British people. Polite? Not when you can't even be arsed to learn the language of your new home-to-be? Eccentric? Not so much as isolationist and self-centred. Individual? Hardly, when you consider they still act like the British Empire's in place, as if France didn't have enough right-wing bigots of its own to worry about.

Of course, Spain is the country that really needs to worry, since France repels people more efficiently than Spain does. Spain doesn't have the same notorious suspicion of foreigners (be they coloured or not!) and while Spanish isn't necessarily straightforward, French is more difficult to learn from scratch.

This highly irritated and ranty post is over now. I will not be surprised if I receive lots of comments bollocking me for my intolerant bollockings of intolerant bollocks.

Hey hey hey Amrit!

:) What's next? Ah oui, ta lettre!!! Trop fort!!! :)

I love this post. When I worked in the UK in the call center, a lady retired at the end of the summer. She moved to Spain. Because "everything is cheap and it's sunny all the time".
Needlessly to say, she did not understand a word of Spanish. She just knew how to say "Please hold the line" - then she transferred the call to a Spanish-speaker. As the workmate, she was lovely, that's not the point. But I cannot understand or support the choice to go to a country where you don't speak the language... As you explained very well, this has nothing to do with migrants workers / refugees.
And the consequences of their take-overs (?) are DISASTROUS for the local, especially the young locals who can not buy/rent a cheap flat/house and become dependent on their families.

Since we're talking about that, I was appaled (?) to read an ad in "attitude" (a gay British magazine) for buying houses in Turkey for a "cheap" prices (prices crazy for the locals, etc).

intolerant bollockerings of intolerant bollocks is always good. Bloody Daily Mail readers who are the first to slag off foreigners here for not learning their 'lingo'.

‘Allo Fab!

I like his style of writing, but I’m not so sure about him ideologically since I researched him ! Exactly, that is a very good point that I didn’t even think to mention – the destructive effect of such immigrants on the existing social and familial networks (btw, it’s ‘appalled’, but wow, your English just gets better and better, I hope my French is OK! Let me know if I fuck up ridiculously! Lol).

That’s also quite bizarre because I can’t imagine Turkey being very accepting of gay people...bien sûr, ce n’est pas comme l’Iran, mais je ne crois pas que ce pays sera très bienveillant vers les homos… Talk about sending them down the wrong track ! Lol.

As-tu ton propre blog? J’aimerais bien lire tes pensées et spéculations…

Biz !

@ Ala:

Haha, I know, but it's not very 'proper' to be all sweary like I was, and so I'm trying to tone it down a bit in my writing! There are times when one loses it though. :-D

Salut salut!

-I won't read the older posts (do you complain about me as well??)

-I don't have my own blog. I've considered the option but I don't feel like having one. However, I've been a guest blogger on my sister's blog, which is shut (down?) now. I'll send you my post (it's on my laptop).

-I do agree with Hari on a lot of topics (if I believe Wikipedia) but I totally oppose his pro-mainstream gay assimilationism. I hate sentences he wrote such as "we're no different from anyone else" or "we're all the same, except for one minor difference which you can only discern in bed." Aaaah!!!

Anyway, gotta reply to some e-mails.
Looking forward to hear from you!

Bisous!

Fab

Take, e.g., http://www.poteriestmichel.free.fr/bienvenue.html

Sue with her family, have been living in southern France for quite sometime now. They both speak French. They are middleclass.
I think you're generalising a little here.

There's something about Paris that makes one aggressive (even passively) about one's Englishness. And the first thing one might say is "parlez vous Anglais?". :-) Let's face it, French as the 'diplomatique' language is no more. :-) It might be American English.

It's very different in Provencal France. A pharmacist is happy to recognise that you're English, and one is happy to respond back in French. There's no aggression. It's strange.

Muhamad -

I agree with much of what you say, but people like Sue and family are exactly who I'm NOT talking about. They have obviously made an effort to try and learn. I know very well how unpleasant and unfriendly France can be for a foreigner - I absolutely hated it there for about 3 months or so.

As you say, the North and South are quite different. I think, because the South is so much more touristy, people have learned to handle foreigners by now. In the North, even in places like Paris, that's not always the case.

With French though, I do see why people struggle, and I said as much. I don't think you can make excuses for not learning Spanish though.

I'm talking about DAILY MAIL READERS. Not all immigrants to Europe are of this breed, but a lot of them are, especially the ones heading to really obvious places like France and Spain. Imean the sort of people who think that other countries should be glad to have them just because they're white, pretty much.

:-D

Just you wait :-P.

Bis! :-D
